MUSIC, CULTURE & SPORTS
JUNIOR CHOIRS
There are 7 choirs in the Junior School: each grade has its own choir. Sometimes these choirs perform on their own and other times they perform as a massed choir. These choirs rehearse during their music lessons. The choirs from grades 1-3 performed at the grade 1 – 3 concert (Four Seasons) and the grade 4 – 7 choirs will perform at the Cultural Evenings. All choirs have also performed at the Annual Music Picnic.
JUNIOR MARIMBA BANDS
There are 2 Junior Bands who perform regularly at school functions as well as at “outside functions”. The grade 5 and 6 Marimba Band meet on a Thursday afternoon.
The grade 5 – 7 Marimba Band meet on a Wednesday afternoon. This band has worked hard this year to develop an interesting and varied repertoire.
Both bands have performed at a number of school functions as well as the 6th National Marimba Festival. We are very proud of their progress and musical ability and look forward to their next performances.
GRADE 2 VIOLIN PROGRAMME
As part of the grade 2 programme, all learners are introduced to the violin through group classes conducted by Francois Bouginon, our resident violin teacher.
For one term each grade 2 learner is taken through an introductory course with the emphasis being on basic technique and open string playing. At the end of each term a short violin concert is given for the parents to showcase their daughter’s newly acquired skills. This is a wonderful programme that is run in only a handful of schools around the country!
GRADE 3 AND 4 RECORDER PROGRAMME
In Grades 3 and 4 all the learners learn to play the recorder. Here the emphasis is on learning the basic technique of wind playing as well as learning to read music. These lessons take place during class music time. The children have many opportunities throughout the year to perform.
SPORTS
NETBAL
Netball at St Dominic’s is FUN, hard work and involves a lot of fitness training. The girls love playing netball and we achieve great results. We train twice a week in winter. We compete against other schools which is great because we are able to gauge our achievement as we progress through the season.
The coaches help us with technique, team work and fitness.
We thoroughly enjoy the teamwork and competition involved. Join us.
JUNIOR SWIMMING (St. Dominic’s Ducklings)
With the addition of our beautiful pool, we have watched the love and interest in school swimming grow every season. We have a squad of approximately 130 girls, most of whom get to participate in the weekly league galas. We belong to the Eastern Gauteng School’s League and the Johannesburg Private School’s League. We enter 4 teams into the former and our A team swims in the latter. Our girls train very hard and the results pay off season after season. As with ISASA rules, we compete from U9 to OPEN. However, we encourage all girls from Grade 2 to come to training in order to get fit and join the team when their times are fast enough. At training, we divide the girls into different ability groups and work on everything from stroke-correction to endurance. Join us in the pool in the 1st and 3rd Terms.
TENNIS
Tennis at St. Dominic’s is exciting and lots of fun. It is one of the sports that take place the whole year. Girls from Grade 1 – 7 are able to participate and learn the different tennis skills. We practice twice a week from January to December. Girls are also selected to play in the team and we compete against other schools and achieve great results. We are also very fortunate to have our own professional coach who coaches our girls during our tennis lessons and in private lessons.
